The amazing joy of a grandchild
My perfect day
My perfect day, well to be fair as per usual I’m bending the truth slightly, because MY perfect day actually stretches over 3 days but, because it adds up to about 24 hours, I reckon I’m justified in calling it one day!
Perfection starts at precisely three minutes to midnight when, after much kerfuffle, the most amazing grandchild in the whole wide-world was born … just for me!
I feel so lucky and very grateful that, having had a prolonged struggle to finally achieve my own son at the ripe old age of 42, I had no expectation at all that I would be lucky enough to become a grandmother at 71.
After less than 24 hours my son and his amazing partner arrived home with their tiny perfect boy-child.
My very generous offer of camping out on their lawn, just in case they needed my assistance at a moments notice, was politely refused.
So I amuse myself by making miles and miles of ‘welcome baby’ bunting and sticking thousands of tiny beads and glittery baubles on wooden hearts … just as all good grandmothers do.
That night I hardly slept a wink … who cares about them?!
BUT I bravely resist each temptation to offer unsolicited advice or ask to come visit.
Rather cunningly, after my extremely long wait, until around 9 the next morning, I send a cheery message saying:
I’m obviously available just to hold him quietly in your spare room whilst you two have a snooze if ya need to? PS I’m not pushing, just offering!! 🥰😂.
I was ignored, for a whole 10 minutes …
Then my son rang and said, he wondered if I’d just pop round, whilst he dealt with the builders and to allow his partner to have a little sleep.
I now experience the absolute joy, that my Wonky-friend Maxine had said I would feel when holding my first grandchild quietly for a couple of hours and doing nothing more than staring at the most perfect child ever to be born!
And my perfect day continued from there:
Oh, I’m having a food delivery, shall I order for you and leave it on your doorstep?
They came and ate with my wonderful sister and I.
Boy-child’s mother is an absolute trooper, she’d only given birth 40 hours previously but said she needed a short walk sooo …
I get another huge cuddle with aforementioned boy-child, yippeee.
I’ve just baked a cake do you want some? (They do live very close).
Oh that’d be great, if you’ll pop it round.
Hi Mam, I’m just coming over for a coffee, will you hold Oscar while I do an online exam-practice please?
Yes, pleeeese!
There’s nothing like a sneaky old woman with dementia, my cunning plan has worked, 😂.
My perfect day, my perfect day I think it’ll last a lifetime
… although I’ll need to step on the bathroom scales, what with all the food gifts!
