If I can’t find something I am looking for a reason for it. Someone’s nicked it or borrowed it or how else do you make sense if something isn’t where you expect it?

Hello it’s George here, in Shropshire. I thought today I want to say something about, something I’ve noticed happening to me recently, and something which is a commonly observed symptom, I call it, of people who are further on in dementia generally speaking than I am. It’s when you think that someone has stolen something or done something that you can’t make sense of. You know the cliche or stereotype, I suppose is, the person with dementia who’s convinced that someone has stolen their keys, or stolen their wallet, or, I don’t know, done something that they shouldn’t have done, that they weren’t allowed to do.

In my case, however, it is more to do with trying to find out a logical explanation for something I can’t understand, and I think this explains, it’s not rocket science this, I think it explains what causes people to have these losses of reality to us but not to them. I’m finding that if I can’t find something in the house or if something appears to be other than how I’m expecting it, I’m looking for a reason for it. And the reason inevitably is that someone’s nicked it, someone’s sort of “borrowed” (in quotes). How else do you make sense of if something isn’t as you expected it, isn’t where you expect it. Because it is the only thing that logically makes sense to you, that someone else has moved it, taken it or whatever. And I can see that happen to myself now and then, now.

Yes, a bit worrying really. Anyway I thought I’d say that. I think we need to understand why people do have these changes in their reality and it’s purely because you have to have, as a person, you have to have a logical, realistic explanation for why something is as you perceive it and if that makes sense to you then you grasp it. It may not be true in other people’s eyes, but to you it is. That’s a really difficult situation to be in, because you can’t just sit back every time and say oh it must be me, must be me, because you get suspicious, you begin to think maybe other people are doing something that they shouldn’t be doing. Maybe somebody did nick the tool that I can’t find and you start to distrust yourself. That’s also disturbing, not so much frightening but disturbing. I may return to this in the future but it’s something I’ve noticed in me and I think it’s something people should be aware of. We’re not mad, we’re not stupid if we think someone’s stolen or I don’t know, done something. It’s what makes sense to us, that’s all. Ok so till next time, bye.
