James wonders about those whose lives were changed following the Aberfan disaster.
Good evening scribe, this is James speaking.
First of all thank you for doing the job that you do. When I was young in school, the year 1066 was drummed into you. I don’t know about more of the current generation, but one date branded in our mind is 11th July 1966 when England football scored, winning the World Cup, the one and only time. But I’m wondering about the 21st October 1966, how many people remember that. That was the year 116 children died in the Aberfan mining disaster.
I wonder which will get the most prominence this year. Because I was thinking, I don’t know if any of them were teenagers, but certainly the older ones would be applying for retirement pensions now. So I had always hoped to visit the Memorial. It never happened. I doubt it’s going to happen now with the Covid situation. So, it’s just a pity. Some of them might have done a lot for us that have got dementia, maybe one of them would have discovered a prevention which is badly needed.
Bye bye.
