“They’ve opened a dementia-friendly check-out!”

by Tommy Dunne

“Hi, it’s Tommy reporting.

I just want to report on this great incentive that Tesco have undertaken on Frodsham Street in Chester.

They’ve opened a dementia-friendly check-out: what a great incentive this is! It allows people with dementia to go through the check-out without the worry of people behind them, thinking: what the hell is going on? Why is he taking so long? What is the cashier doing? And the pressure’s also being taken off the cashiers, because they’ve received dementia training and know now how to deal with people with dementia.

You can feel how happy the atmosphere is when you go to the check-out, because the cashier is confident, the person with dementia is confident, and it’s a happy shopping experience.

Well done to Tesco Chester for being the first to take part in this initiative, and hopefully other stores will get me and Gina to open some more for them!”
