Joy is horrified that ‘The Long Goodbye’ is being aired AGAIN!

Joy: Would you believe it, the Long Goodbye advert is being aired again.

Interjection: What?

Joy: I may be the only one that was negatively affected by this campaign last time …

Interjection: No

Joy: … but I’m not sure I was.

Joy: Don’t get me wrong: I accept that the message about dementia needs to be out there. But homing-in on such emotive stuff isn’t helpful to those of us trying to live our best with what is a devastating disease.

We don’t need to be reminded of what our future looks like. And our friends and families don’t need to be bombarded with how bad things might get.

How dare a supposedly caring organisation mess with our heads, our emotions, and our wellbeing?

Perhaps if the decision makers for such content experienced life with a dementia diagnosis, they would be better placed to understand how we are left feeling.

OK, one argument might be: just turn the TV off. Easier said than done. By the time we’ve located the remote, the ad is well established, and even when we have found the control we don’t always remember how to use it.

Come on. It’s not all about giving out information and raking in financial gains, it’s about people and how we can be affected by an event that lacks empathy.
