“After diagnosis my immediate response was: I don’t wish to drive anymore”

“I would like to make a report on the question of driving, when you’ve been diagnosed with dementia. When I was diagnosed, and going to the question of driving, my immediate response was: I don’t wish to drive anymore. Because for the simple reason that if I had an accident with a child, and that child was killed, I would never forgive myself.
I was equally surprised by the paperwork that I got, which indicated that I would be able to drive if I was tested again. They gave me two places to go: one was in North London, and the other one was in Leicester Way.
I haven’t got any further details ’cause I can’t remember – but how do I get there in my car?”
Addendum: Wednesday 11th March –
I know someone who was diagnosed in February [one month after me] who was advised locally to contact Northampton and as such he was given a 12 month license. The tests are held annually for him and the test takes 1.5 hours and it is not in your own car. This is not acceptable.
