Rae reflects upon the ghosts of Christmas past.
Hi, this is Rae Burton checking in. Been a weird night. Didn’t sleep so well. Sort of ghosts of people past, if you like. I got up for a wee in the middle of the night and I tiptoed past my daughter’s bedroom so I didn’t wake her up, and she’s 26, married, and lives in Doncaster. And then I got back into bed and I couldn’t get back to sleep for listening to me mum chunter. And me mum, when we were kids, when we’d gone to bed and it was her turn for bed, she’d go and sit in the bedroom and she’d just rattle on about how the day had gone and everything else. And I’m laying there in bed and I’m thinking, ‘I can’t go to sleep, ’cause me mum’s chuntering on,’ and she passed away last year and I could hear her plain as day, and I’m like, ‘I’m laying here awake and I can hear me mum.’ So I’m thinking, ‘okaaaay.’ So I snuggled down, I thought, ‘I’m going to try and get to sleep, put it all behind me.’ So I must’ve drifted off to sleep and then me sister woke me up, coughing. And me and me sister shared a bedroom and she had childhood asthma. She grew out of it, but she used to cough a lot, most of the night and keep us awake and she woke me up coughing and she’s not here either. So I’ve had the weirdest night. I don’t know where my head is, to be honest. I don’t know – I just honestly don’t know where my head is today. I don’t know what’s left and right, what’s right and wrong. It’s really sort of blown my mind a wee bit. I didn’t expect it. I really didn’t.
