Gail is very hurt and upset by a thoughtless overheard comment
Hi, it’s Gail and I thought I’d do a quick blog because I’m holding something in inside which I think I need to get out.
I overheard a comment the other day and it made me realise that well, am I already a burden? I can’t really put into words how I felt when I overheard the comment being spoken about me. But, the comment was this
“Shouldn’t her parents be looking after her now?”
I was gobsmacked, I mean how blind can some people be? How hurtful can some people be?
I don’t live at home with my parents and I haven’t done since about 1983/84 and my parents are both in their eighties and my Dad has vascular dementia and my Mum has her hands full caring for my Dad. Mum has enough adapting every single day to accommodate my Dad’s dementia and apart from that, the fact I’m married to my husband for quite a number of years, I can’t remember how long it’s been now, so why on earth should my parents be looking after me now?
The comment floored me a little bit and it made me realise that if it had of been in the 1960s, this particular family member would have definitely had me institutionalised in a psychiatric hospital.
Have I become that much of an embarrassment, a hindrance or a burden?
I’m so angry… I’m so upset!
What a cruel comment to make. People have no idea what goes on behind closed doors and I know that I blog regularly about me and hubby but I don’t publicise everything that happens in our home. We just deal with things, we deal with things ourselves.
Both me and hubby rarely ask for help, that’s just the way we are and we just keep ourselves to ourselves and get on with things. We just get on with life. Because we’ve no idea how long it will be before dementia takes over, so we try to make the most of every day, the best way that we possibly can. We try to make the most of what time we have together but today, I’m feeling angry and I’m feeling upset and my brain is finding it hard to process the comments.
I felt like running away. Not running away from hubby, but just running away from people who make life so very difficult, especially when you live with dementia.
Thank you for listening to me, bye.
