Another bad experience in a hospital for one of the Educate DEEP group motivates the group to do more training with the hospital

I was at the Educate meeting today and we were talking about one of our members who had had an experience at the local hospital when he was taken in having bad chest pains. He went in by ambulance and was kept in overnight, however, he began to get delirious, the ward was very busy and there was nobody that understood what was happening. There were no forget-me-nots by anybody’s bed and he was really struggling. He then left the hospital, walked out and walked a mile down the road on his own. Police car stopped and picked him up and brought him back to the hospital. While we were talking I remembered Agnes Houston’s dementia diary about the time she was in hospital when she had pneumonia. I mentioned this to Mark and we are going to now do some more training about people going into hospital who have dementia. Also mention more about how infections, illness, UTI can cause a person with dementia to become delirious and how to help and make them feel calmer so that’s something that I’ve learnt today and Mark will have a look at Agnes’s diary about her experience in hospital. There was also a lady sitting next to me who was from Yorkshire somewhere at an NHS up there and I told her about dementia diaries and all about us and she’s written the name down and she’s going to have a look at what we do as well.
