“How cool it’d be to have a companion that doesn’t try to finish my sentences for me”

– by Joy Watson

“Hilda Rummage reporting. I’ve got my indecision head on today, and it’s got nothing to do with dementia. In fact I think I’ve got two heads. Please don’t try to visualise me with two heads, not a pretty sight.

One head is my sad head, the other my excited, expectant head. The sad head because we are attending a relative’s funeral. Excited head because this evening I’m picking up my puppy, whose name is Demy, short for Dementia Dog. I intend to train her to remind me when to take my medication, to accompany me to all the presentations I give, and to be a companion. How cool it’d be to have a companion that doesn’t try to finish my sentences for me, or give me the word I’m struggling to find, albeit the wrong word.

There’s a time to be sad and a time to be happy. So I’ll be sensitive to the situation. And Hilda can dictate the head today.”
